Gyvnn Mendenhall Takes Second at Districts

Sophomore Gyvnn Mendenhall showed out at wrestling districts this Friday, March 6, and Saturday, March 7, taking second place in the 195 lb. weight class.

Coming into the tournament with an impressive record of 38-4, Mendenhall pinned Chesapeake High School junior Hector Martinez in just two and a half minutes in the first round on Friday. He then went on to pin Buckeye Local junior Alexio Morales in 3 minutes and 49 seconds in the quarterfinals later that day.

On Saturday, Mendenhall faced off against Pleasant High School junior Connor Sparling in the semifinals, pinning him in 5 minutes and 50 seconds. This win put him in the finals match against Martins Ferry senior Richard McFarland. Both wrestlers refused to be pinned and were tied 2-2 as the clock ticked down, but McFarland managed to earn more points at the last second, besting Mendenhall 8-2.

With his second place finish, Mendenhall now qualifies for the state tournament on Saturday, March 14, and Sunday, March 15.
