The Service Board tweaked the proposal guidelines for the first time in 10 years, implementing new rules and regulations that passed unanimously on Tuesday, January 7. The revisions followed challenges in reviewing complex service site proposals and prompting the need for clearer, more consistent guidelines. After an extended shaper meeting reviewing the recent complications, they came up with two changes.
First, “the work being done must directly impact and be accessible to those in need,” allowing students whose efforts affect recipients without direct, face-to-face interaction to earn service hours.
The second change clarifies that students cannot fulfill requirements in hopes of advancing in a position because the reward should be the service itself. Only uncompensated work done from the heart is allowed.
These adjustments have been set in motion and will be used in incoming proposals, but they do not affect previously approved proposals.
Shaper Miranda B.-Y. says, “ The Service Board Policies for off-campus service are really going to help clarify questions from both shapers and students regarding the approval of service sites.”
