The 2022 Band Awards were announced during the Upper School Band Concert on Sunday, April 24. Voted by the entirety of the band through a google form, the band awards include Outstanding New Member, Most Improved Members & Section, and the John Philip Sousa Award.

Kate F, a clarinet player, received outstanding new member, an award given out to a first-year member of the band that has played a substantial role in the program. Kate has had previous musical experience playing the cello for both Academy’s Orchestra and the Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestra.

Ridah A and Vernon W received Most Improved Members, while the Flute Section received Most Improved award. Raaghav M, Saagar A, Samantha F, Sophie L, Margaret K, Ella F, Grade E, Adrianna B, and Sarthak A were the recipients.

Ben A earned the John Philip Sousa Award. It recognizes one senior who displays superior musicianship, dependability, loyalty, and cooperation. Created by Helen Sousa Albert and Priscilla Sousa, daughters of the famous composer and bandmaster John Philip Sousa, this prize is bestowed to many band directors throughout the nation as the pinnacle of their achievement in a high school band.

In the upcoming Jazz Band Concert, “All That Jazz,” on May 23, Ms. Sneeringer will announce the jazz awards, so stop by and support your fellow Viking musicians!
