In 2020, Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher’s Netflix comedy hit landed at #1 on the streaming site. Narrated by former tennis champion, John McEnroe, with actor Andy Samberg and model Gigi Hadid, the writers loosely adapted this story from her childhood experiences as a first-generation Indian American girl.
After her father’s sudden death, Devi Vishwakumar (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) struggles with her identity as a high school sophomore. Instead of withholding the “stereotypical Indian girl” status, she strives to become more popular by trying to upgrade her social rank with her peers, including getting the attention of the most popular guy in school. Meanwhile, she finds it hard to cooperate with her overbearing mother, Nalini (Poorna Jagannathan), and their relationship is put to the test.
From love triangles to family dilemmas, Devi’s life has engaged over 40 million households worldwide since its release.
Season Two is available for streaming only on Netflix, with episodes running 22-31 minutes each.
