Academy falls to Harvest Prep in Fourth Quarter Nailbiter

Sam Huyghe ’21 mosses a Harvest Prep defender.

Academy hosted Harvest Prep for round 3 of playoffs on Saturday, October 25. The Warriors were looking for revenge after Academy snapped their 38 game winning streak and handed them their only loss earlier in the season.

The game started off slowly as neither team put points on the board until the Vikings pulled out a trick flea-flicker late in the first quarter with quarterback Brady Hess’21 hitting a wide open Sam Huyghe’21 for a 66-yard touchdown. After that, the scoring drought continued as both defenses held strong the rest of the first half.

In the 3rd quarter, however, the Warriors’ deadly run game came alive and punched in two touchdowns to take the lead 14 – 7.

The Vikings mounted an electric comeback attempt in the 4th quarter, opening up with a field goal by senior Jonah Houston before recovering a fumble with under two minutes left to play. The Vikings immediately drove down the field and set the sideline alight as Hess connected with Huyghe yet again for a 22-yard touchdown to regain the 17-14 lead  with just over a minute left. Harvest Prep refused to go down, scoring again on the ensuing two plays to take back the lead. Academy denied the Warriors’ two-point conversion to keep the chances alive for a field goal to send the game to overtime. But Harvest Prep’s defense held strong in the last few seconds of the game and closed it out 20-17.

The familiar Hess to Huyghe combination was the brightest spot of the game as Huyghe accounted for 125 yards and two touchdowns along with Academy’s defense, which forced four turnovers and allowed zero passing touchdowns.

The Vikings end the season 6-2 (5-0) as MSL champions, with the senior class achieving four consecutive winning seasons and going perfect against Bexley throughout their time at Academy.
