The girls had their district semifinal match at Fairbanks on Tuesday, October 27. Fortunately, our Vikes put on a dominant performance. Controlling possession for most of the game, they took a total of 11 shots with five on target.
After the first half, the game was tied 0-0. As time winded down, the girls were pressured to score a goal. With ten minutes remaining, our Vikes scored a phenomenal goal from captain Louise Rosler ’16. Sophie Krings’17 dribbled through the defense and was able to lay the ball off to Rosler for the goal.
With seven minutes left in the match, Apsara Som’18 weaved through the defense, scoring another goal, keeping the Vikes in a 2-0 lead.
With three minutes remaining in the match, Fairbanks was awarded a free kick after a foul from Som, for which she was given a yellow card warning. The Fairbanks shooter hit an impressive 35-yard shot that hit the top right corner of the crossbar. The ball bounced back into the 18-yard box, and Fairbanks knocked the ball in to give them a goal, bumping the score to 2-1.
The girls played great defense and were able to come away with the win. With the win, the girls advance to the district finals. Their next match will be played at a neutral field, Canal Winchester, against Grandview at 7 pm on Saturday, October 31. Go Vikes!
