Golf Team Advances to Districts

On Tuesday, September 29, the golf team competed in Sectionals, hoping to make it to Districts–and just as last year–advance to States. Tuesday’s tournament was tougher than the team expected, with harsh rain and winds, which slowed the pace of the match and made it difficult to play.

Tuesday’s tournament was led by Sam Vogel’18 with a 78 and captain Vincent Dong’16 with an 80. The team ended with a score of 323 and finished in third place, which was not as well as they hoped but good enough to move them to Districts. Coach Yakscoe told the team, “Our main goal was to make it through to Districts, and we did just that.”

The golf team moved up to Division II this year, meaning they will face tougher opponents like Bexley and Bishop Hartley throughout their post season run. The upcoming District tournament is one of the most important tournaments this year because of the fierce competition.

Despite the lackluster performance, captain Michael Zhang’17 says that “it’s encouraging to know that we can get the job done, even when we have a bad day. It’s also great to know that even when our top 3 guys don’t play their best, our 4 and 5 guys are able to step up and fill that role, which is what makes us such a strong team.”

Although the odds are stacked against them, our boys aren’t willing to end the season without a fight.

The District tournament is next Tuesday, October 6, at Denison Golf Course. Come out and support our Vikings!
