The Vikings soundly defeated Grandview Heights on Wednesday, April 13, with a 19-9 win. Down by four in the 6th inning, Academy pulled through with 15 runs in the last two innings to keep its winning record for conference games. Offense highlights included Nick Stringer’17, Lou Burns’17, and Nick Rothman’19 with five, four, and three hits, respectively. Pitchers, Matthew Watters’16 and Matthew Sailings’18, led the defense with Watters throwing 14 first pitch strikes and Sailings with five strikeouts.
On Thursday, April 14, after eight innings of back and forth of one-ups against Worthington Christian, Academy claimed victory once again, winning 5-4. Watters, Stringer, and sophomores Davis Friedman and Ryan Mitchell, helped the boys gain ten hits. Friedman and Stringer each pitched for four innings with a combined 19 first pitch strikes and a strikeout.
Fending off a last minute surge from London on Friday, April 15, the Vikes triumphed with a 4-2 win. Matthew Schmitz’17 pitched the full game, with two strikeouts and 16 first pitch strikes. Watters and Burns each had two hits, and Friedman and Mitchell had a combined total of three walks, helping Academy gain four runs in the first five innings.
After a putting up a good fight on Saturday morning, April 16, our boys lost 1-11 against St. Charles. Jake Mitchell’16 pitched one inning with two strikeouts and three first pitch strikes, but these efforts weren’t enough to ward off the Cardinals.
In the afternoon, after tying during the fifth inning 5-5 against Reynoldsburg, the boys fell to another loss of 5-7 after a sudden lead change in the sixth inning. Stringer, J. Mitchell, Friedman, and Burns performed exceptionally with two hits by Stringer and two walks from J. Mitchell. Freshmen Hayden Compton and Rothman both pitched, with Rothman throwing eight first pitch strikes. Sailing also pitched seven first pitch strikes and two strikeouts.
