On Friday, February 6, our Service Board took time out of its regular school day to thank the adults who help keep the school running during its annual Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day, designed to give students “a chance to do something nice for the faculty, “says Ms. Bening. Leadership for the event comes from Service Board presidents, including one Shaper, Mmesoma N.
In the weeks leading up to the celebration, Service Board posted envelopes for all US teachers outside the SHACK for students to write notes of appreciation to teachers and staff members who have supported them or made a positive impact on them. These handwritten messages are a key part of the day. “The teachers love them and keep them,” says Bening. “It is very sentimental.”
On the day itself, Service Board volunteers traveled throughout teachers’ classrooms and staff offices with a cart filled with hot coffee and cold drinks, a small but meaningful gesture of gratitude for their work and dedication to the school community.
FSDay has a long history at Academy, existing in various forms since at least 1987. In the past, students even organized a large-catered luncheon where they served as wait staff, though the tradition eventually changed due to its high cost.
For Bening, the importance of the day goes beyond thanking teachers alone. She emphasized the value of recognizing everyone who contributes to daily life at the school, including our Dining Hall employees, administrative staff, and maintenance staff. “Making a concerted effort to say thank you to all the members of the community helps students acknowledge the many people who support them behind the scenes,” says Bening.
Through notes and snacks, FSA Day continues to be a tradition that strengthens the bond between students and the adults who support them at Academy.
