The wrestling team faced off in Gahanna Lincoln’s Alumni Classicon on Saturday, January 24, where it finished 11th out of 12 teams, scoring 54.5 points. Only three wrestlers from the squad competed, however, which affected the team’s total score.

In the 113-pound weight class, freshman Gavin H. went 1-0, handily defeating West’s Jaycob J. by a technical foul, 17-2, in the first round of his pool and the first round of the overall tournament. Only two wrestlers were in Gavin’s weight class, making him the first-place winner of the pool and class.

Senior Henry S. wrestled in the 175-pound weight class, finishing second, winning three matches, and conceding just one. Pinned in the first match by Northland’s Westley Philips, Henry had a bye in the second. Henry pinned West’s junior Elijah A. in the third round and then pinned sophomore Andre P. from Walnut Ridge in the fourth. He pinned Hamilton Township’s senior James R. in the last three rounds. In the bracket to determine a winner of the entire weight class, Henry pinned Bloom-Carool’s senior Zach M. in the third and seventh rounds, which clinched Henry the third-place medal.

Sophomore Josh L. in the 190-pound class was pinned by Bishop Ready’s senior Bobby K. in round one and pinned Hamilton Township’s Josiah S. in the second. He had a bye in round three and then lost by a decision with an 8-4 score to Riley T. of Bloom-Carroll. In the sixth round, Josh pinned West’s Thomas W. in the first round of the consolation bracket. He backed up that win with a 6-4 decision win in the seventh round against Columbus South’s Tommy S., finishing his day with a winning record of three wins and two losses.

The Vikes wrestle at home on Wednesday, January 28, at 5:00 p.m, against Grandview Heights.

They will compete in the Central Buckeye League tournament at Whitehall-Yearling on Saturday, January 31. The time is yet to be determined.
