Summer Reading Takes Off

With summer around the corner, librarians Ms. Popelka and Ms. Yanke launched the summer reading program with forty-seven books making the cut out of fifty-five faculty nominations. Contrary to past years, Yanke says that there is a spike in the number of non-fiction titles present in this year’s selection. The most popular novel is Ernest Cline’s science-fiction Ready Player One, with non-fiction The Psychology of Money being a close second.

In Ready Player One, teenager Wade Watts enters a high-stakes virtual reality contest within the OASIS, a sprawling digital world, to find a hidden Easter egg left by its creator. As he competes against powerful corporate rivals, Wade must decipher clues rooted in 1980’s culture to save the OASIS and the future.

On the contrary, The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel, explores how emotions, biases, and experiences shape our financial decisions more than logic or knowledge. Through engaging stories and insights, it is a guide that emphasizes the importance of behavior, patience, and humility in building lasting wealth.

This reading tradition not only connects students with peers in discussion groups but also builds bonds between teachers and students through their shared interest in novels.

Groups and meeting places are posted online.

Happy reading!
