On January 31 and February 1, the Columbus Academy Middle School Theater Department transported audiences to Bikini Bottom with its production of The Spongebob Musical: Youth Edition. Vibrant stage design, energetic performances, and stunning vocals brought the beloved characters to life.

The story follows SpongeBob SquarePants and his friends as they discover that Mount Humongous, a nearby volcano, threatens to erupt and destroy their town. Determined to save Bikini Bottom, SpongeBob teams up with his friends to prevent the disaster.

The cast delivered standout performances, fully embodying their characters. Aashi M., who portrayed SpongeBob, impressed from start to finish with her beautiful singing and strong comedic timing, capturing the character’s signature charm with ease. Ina A., who played Patrick, entertained with an endearing performance, bringing warmth and humor to the role. Her chemistry with SpongeBob shined, particularly during their duet “BFF,” where their friendship dance made their bond look and feel authentic. And Teddy D., who played Plankton, stole the show with stellar comedic timing in both musical numbers and scenes. Judging by the audience’s reactions, he was a fan favorite.

Several musical numbers stood out for their dynamic performances. “Just a Simple Sponge” showcased Aashi’s impressive vocal ability as SpongeBob, blending determination and vulnerability into an uplifting solo. Meanwhile, “When the Going Gets Tough” brought energy to the stage, as Teddy’s Plankton led a high-powered rap number. The variety of musical styles throughout the show kept each song fresh and entertaining.

Beyond the leads, the ensemble added energy and personality into every scene, making Bikini Bottom feel alive. Each performer contributed to the action and added depth to the show.

The technical crew executed every element seamlessly. The set incorporated creative and multi-purpose props that transported the audience to the deep sea world without overshadowing the performances. The sound team balanced music and dialogue perfectly, ensuring every lyric and line reached the audience clearly. Lighting also played a major role in immersing the audience in Bikini Bottom. Bright, dynamic colors filled the stage, mimicking the underwater world, while well-timed effects heightened the tension in high-energy scenes and increased the impact of quieter moments. The technical team ensured each scene was visually engaging and immersive.

Although the performers were middle school students, several upper school students contributed their time as student directors. Addison G., Lucy I., Dillion L., Carolina M., Izuhi N., Sophie P., Belle R., and Leah S. played key roles in bringing the production together. Addison G. said, “I loved getting to help out with the musical. Getting to run sound was a new experience for me and one I would gladly do again. I am so proud of the whole cast!”

With its high-energy performances, the performers delivered a production filled with heart and humor.
