Empowering Young Voters to Shape Democracy’s Future

For the third consecutive year, Columbus Academy proudly joins the Youth at the Booth (YAB) program, spearheaded by senior, Clara S., and ceramics teacher, Ms. Charity White. This year’s involvement is particularly exciting because it coincides with the presidential election, giving eligible individuals as young as 17 the chance to actively engage in the democratic process.

Poll workers play a vital role in Ohio elections, and the Secretary of State actively encourages parents, teachers, and coaches to motivate eligible youth to participate. Participants can earn between $158.70 and $190 (pay varies by county), gain community service hours, and enhance their college applications. Further, this experience fosters civic involvement and demonstrates the essential role young adults play in their communities by ensuring every voter has the opportunity to cast their ballot.

To be eligible for the program, candidates must meet several criteria. First, they must be at least 17 years old and maintain good standing at their respective schools, meaning their absences must be approved, and they should stay current with their assignments. Additionally, participants are required to provide their Social Security Number for payroll purposes and must be U.S. citizens residing in the county where they wish to work. Parental approval is mandatory for minors, so applicants need to ensure their Application/Permission Form is fully completed. Reliable transportation is essential, as participants may be assigned to any voting location within their county. A two-hour training and interview session is also required, and participants should be prepared for a full day of work on Election Day, beginning at 5:30 a.m. and concluding after 8:30 p.m.

At Columbus Academy, interest in the Youth at the Booth program is strong, with five individuals expressing interest in serving in Delaware County and thirteen opting for Franklin County. While registration for this year’s program has closed, it is important for students to stay informed about this initiative and the experiences of their peers.

Ms.White, a former YAB participant herself, emphasizes the program’s significance, saying, “[Youth at the Booth] is a space where everyone can come together for a better tomorrow.” She highlights that “it’s not a place for politics, but a space where people can come together with the common goal to help their community.”
