As summer draws near, Ms. Popelka launched her Summer Reading Program with 33 selections that were curated by faculty members, including mysteries and thrillers to works on business and leadership. Two of the most popular novels include Holly Jackson’s A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder and Phil Knight’s Shoe Dog.
In Jackson’s thriller, high schooler Pippa Fitz-Amobi obsesses over the death of Andie Bell, a fellow student. Pippa doubts Andie’s boyfirend, Sal, is guilty. So Pippa teams up Sal’s younger brother, Ravi, and uncovers clues that suggest the real killer might still be at large.
Shifting focus to Knight’s memoir, Shoe Dog details his daring entrepreneurial journey. At twenty-four, Knight’s borrowed fifty dollars from his father to import affordable, high-quality running shoes from Japan. Selling shoes from his car trunk, he generated $8,000 in the first year. Today, Nike is a global brand with over $30 billion in annual sales.
Book assignments were posted on May 22, and reading groups met the next day for a 15-minute discussions. Students will submit assignments and have group conversations during the first week of school.
