Continuing its postseason play, boys tennis hosted the Division II Central District finals on Thursday, May 16, before competing against Bexley on Friday, May 17, for a spot at states.
In singles, Nason L. swept past London and Bexley, securing two 6-0, 6-0 victories. Against another Bexley player for the district champion title, he fell 0-6, 2-6, becoming district runner-up.
Rowen L. and Lucas X. dominated in the doubles tournament, beating Jonathan Alder once (6-0, 6-1) and Bexley twice (6-0, 6-1 & 6-2, 6-4) to become district champions. With the top two in each tournament advancing to states, congratulations Nason, Rowen, and Lucas!
Back in action on Friday, May 17, Academy hosted Bexley in the team district finals. First doubles Ian C. and Rowen clinched an easy 6-4, 6-0 win, and second doubles duo Sujay B. and Jayden T. secured the first set 6-4 before defeating their opponents in a second set tiebreaker, 7-5.
With two courts secured, all eyes turned to Nason in second singles for the determining point. As the team lined the court and supporters lined the stands, the ball swooshed back and forth, back and forth, before Bexley hit it out of bounds. The courts erupted in cheers and screams as the team crowded around Nason’s 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 victory. With a spot to states secured, the Vikings left with hope and glory.
To conclude their season, the boys will compete at states on Tuesday, May 23, and Friday, May 24. Best of luck to our tennis Vikings!
