After years of endless recycled reboots and soulless sequels hitting the silver screen, one adaptation may hold the potential to outlive its source. Dune 2, starring Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya, hit the box office on March 1, earning $327 million worldwide. Many fans waited for its release by camping out at movie theaters. The movie is a sequel to Dune and an adaptation of the 1965 Frank Herbert series of the same name. 

Praise for this film isn’t just heard from fans, with critics calling the movie the biggest of the year and a future cult classic akin to the Star Wars franchise. With three more novels to adapt, the series doesn’t seem to be stopping production anytime soon.

The movie follows Paul Atreities as he assimilates into the Fremen tribe and plots his revenge on House Harkonen, the house responsible for his father’s murder and the destruction of his House, all while realizing his place in the prophecies he is meant to fulfill.

Though it is rare for me to enjoy a sequel or a sci-fi movie, I have to agree with the critics. This film was captivating. Though a little confusing, the overall plot, timeline, and setting were imaginative and accurate to the source material, creating a beautifully complicated world in which the viewer can easily get lost. Chalamet’s performance was easily one of the best of his career, with him perfectly portraying the tortured, perceived savior of a foreign planet. 

From costuming and soundtrack to cinematography, Dune 2 exceeded already high expectations and promises an even better third installment to this growing series.
