The spring sports season is here, which means boys lacrosse is back in action. The team had mixed results last year, as they went 5-12 and lost in the second round of the playoffs to the hands of rival St. Francis Desales. In spite of this, the boys are poised for a stellar 2024 campaign. They are returning 7 of 10 starters from last year and are under the leadership of first year Head Coach Joel Zelesky.
Zelesky was an All-American at Seton Hall before playing professionally for three teams. He has worked as a coach at both the high school and college level, earning special honors as an assistant coach at Denison University. Last season he worked as an assistant coach for Academy’s girls lacrosse team.
With Coach Zelesky at the helm, the Vikes began their first week of competition with a 2-1 record. They opened with a 13-9 loss to St. Charles. The boys started out slow, but a third-quarter push kept them in contention. The Cardinals managed two pull away in the fourth quarter to capture the win.
The Vikes were back the following night when they traveled to Granville. The Vikes got off to a hot start but couldn’t create much separation from the Blue Aces. Yet the Vikes secured the victory, thanks to a combined 10 goals from Ryne W. and Ryan H.
On Saturday the team welcomed Indian Hill to Hondros for the Vikes first home game of the season. The Vikes got off to a slow start but found their groove in the second quarter. Although it was somewhat of a sloppy game, the Vikings delivered a convincing 10-4 victory.
The Vikes take on John Glenn at home at 7 p.m. this Wednesday, April 10.
