Honoring Dr. King by walking “Miles for Martin” (Vaanika J/Media)

All Academy divisions attended an assembly to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his contributions to the Civil Rights Movement on Friday, January 13.

Our fourth and fifth-grade choirs began the event performing “This Little Light of Mine,” followed by upper schoolers Ceci R. and Yassah T. iwho ntroduced the guest speaker, Dr. Carlotta Penn, who displayed images throughout King’s life. Penn invited students to the microphone to describe what they thought was happening during those moments. A highlight of the student responses included three kindergarteners sharing the same interpretation of King’s message: “Be kind to others.”

After the all-school observance, upper school students attended a numver of MLK-related activities, which included the documentary, Amend, an exploration Black artists from the Civil Rights Movement, and participated in Miles for Martin while walking on the track asthey listened to King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. 

Other activities included learning about “The Diving Nine” and the history of stepping and other African dances. Some students explored how music played a part in the Civil Rights Movement, while others spent time in the library reading books about MLK or the history of Civil Rights in the United States.

These activities created a meaningful dialogue about the impact of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and reinforced the importance of honoring him each year.
