While many students took the day off on Martin Luther King (MLK) Day to sleep in or catch up with homework, Service Board (SB) and Latin Club served others by hosting a “Bake for Good” event on both on campus and virtually.

For over 15 years, it has been a Service Board tradition to serve on the MLK holiday. Past SB leaders Elaine Law and Kishore Jayanti’01 established this tradition after reading about the civil rights leader’s fight against poverty and the nationwide “A Day On, Not a Day Off” event conducted in his honor. According to the AmeriCorps website, MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service. 

In past years, the MLK Day service project has focused upon making Project Linus blankets. Inspired by LS teacher Ms. Ramsey who hosted a “Bake for Good” event with fourth grade students, Latin students added “Bake for Good” to this year’s MLK Day of Service. While students at CA waited for their dough to transform into bread, they decorated quilt squares for Project Linus. Special thanks to LS teacher Ms. Hansen who prepared over 300 squares!

If you did not bake bread this year, maybe next during next year’s MLK day you can make it a “day on” and participate in the Service Board’s tradition in memory of the great Dr. King whose life mission was to help others.
