CA started off the week with a home warm-up meet against Bishop Watterson on Tuesday, January 21, showing the team was well prepared for even stiffer competition a few days later.
Sophomore Lauren Klinefelter won both the 200 and 500 free, with senior Annalise Grammel getting second in the 500, while fellow sophomores Alexandra Butnariu and Emma Yakam went one-and-two in the 200 IM. Butnariu also secured first in the 100 butterfly.
The relays were not to be outdone, as the all-sophomore squad of Butnariu, Klinefelter, Mary Kate Prall, and Claire Richardson won the 200 free relay. Combating the sophomores was the all-senior squad of Grammel, Whitney Hannallah, Taylor Warren, and Abby Yacome, who got second in the 200 medley relay.
Coming off of these impressive results, our girls felt ready on Saturday, January 25, as CA faced off against thirteen other talented teams at home for the annual League meet, emerging in second to league newcomer CSG with a score of 224 points.
In the 200 medley relay, Grammel, Klinefelter, Warren, and Yacome raced to second place with a time of 1:59.71, falling only to CSG. Meanwhile, Butnariu, Grammel, Klinefelter, and Prall claimed another second in the 400 freestyle relay, just getting out-touched by CSG at the finish.
Individual swimmers also worked hard to give the Vikes a shot at the league title, with Butnariu earning third in the 200 and 500 freestyle, and Klinefelter doing likewise in the 200 IM. Klinefelter also secured second in the 100 butterfly, while Prall placed third in the 100 backstroke. Facing 45 other competitors was Grammel in the 50 freestyle, swimming her way to fifth place.
Our varsity girls have a break in meets this week, and will be cheering on the teams JV swimmers at the JV Championships at CSG on Saturday, February 1.
