The Columbus Academy girls basketball team split two league games this week, picking up a big blowout win over Wellington, 55-7.

On Tuesday, January 14, the girls played a rivalry game against a tough Bexley squad. Trailing 7-2 early in the first quarter, junior Kayla McClendon knocked down a corner three to cut the Lions lead to 2. 

The Vikes continued a trend of 2nd quarter struggles, giving up a big lead to the opposition and facing an uphill battle in the second half. Late in the third, sophomore Sophie Spolter hit a three-pointer to give CA some much needed momentum, bringing the game to 27-11.

Then, early in the fourth, Spolter and McClendon each hit another trey, but it wasn’t enough to offset a cold shooting night for the Vikings. Despite a strong defensive effort, they fell to the Lions 44-32. The rim seemed to have a lid on it all night, as the girls were only shot 24% from the field and 20% from behind the arc.

After a disappointing loss, the Vikes were out for a win against a struggling Wellington squad. This one was over before it even started, as CA outplayed the Jaguars in every aspect of the game. Freshman Claire Cahall turned in a strong effort, dropping a career high of 16 points. Spolter and McClendon dropped 13 and 11, respectively, and the Vikes ran away with a 55-7 win. 

Our girls will look to avenge their loss to the Lions on Tuesday, January 21, at home.
