On Tuesday, October 1, Academy’s field hockey team took on the Granville Blue Aces in an easy matchup for our girls, who are ranked fifth in the West/Midwest division by MAX Field Hockey.
The Vikes coasted at Granville to a 9-0 victory, with Abby Yakam’20, Kiersten Thomassey’20, and Ashley Reynolds’21 scoring two a piece and Annie Wimsatt’20, Sarah Klingerman’21, and Avery Mitchell’22 netting one each.
On Friday, October 4, Academy played Olentangy Liberty at home on Senior Night, Gigi Bates, Lauren Bernacki, Helene Dubelle, Riley Hennessy, Belle Kornberg, Alex Phelps, Kiersten Thomassey, Annie Wimsatt, and Abby Yakam were honored for their dedication to the field hockey program.
A more formidable foe than Granville, the Patriots kept up with the Vikings in a fast-paced, intense matchup. While Liberty got onto Academy’s half of the field a few times, the Vikes’ strong defense made sure that goalie Alex Phelps was not challenged too much.
In the first half, Academy earned a penalty corner, which Carolyn Vaziri’22 inserted to Thomassey at the top of the circle. Thomassey ripped a shot and it ricocheted off of Klingerman’s stick into the back of the cage, opening up the scoring for the Vikings. A few minutes later, Thomassey hammered one home for her first of the night. Then, Klingerman tapped her second one of the night into the back of the cage, with Thomassey doing the same only a couple minutes after. The score at halftime: Vikings four, Patriots zero.
In the second half, Academy dominated the match and created many chances but just could not put them away. The game’s final score was 4-0, bringing their record to 13-0-1 on the season without a single goal being scored against the squad.
The Vikes look to close out their regular season with two more wins at home against Bexley on Thursday, October 10, and against Pioneer on Friday, October 11.
