Riding high off of a 3-0 win in a rematch of last year’s state finals against the Hudson Explorers, the Academy girls field hockey team looked to remain undefeated without conceding a single goal.
On Tuesday, September 3, our girls took on the Upper Arlington Golden Bears at home. As expected, the Vikes dominated the matchup, shutting out UA and scoring 11 goals, adding another win to their record for the season.
Two days later on Thursday, September 5, Academy stepped onto Carlin Field looking to extend their series of victories and win a tough matchup against a solid Bishop Watterson team in another game with a playoff-like atmosphere.
The Eagles didn’t have many opportunities, spending most of the game with all of their players chasing and swarming the ball, making it near impossible for the Vikings to pass or weave through defenders. Despite this, Academy still had numerous opportunities to score but could not capitalize.
Near the beginning of the second half, Regan Cornelius’21 had a shot in the circle that hit a Watterson defender’s foot, and the team found itself with a penalty corner. Carolyn Vaziri’22 inserted the ball to Kiersten Thomassey’20, who slipped a pass left to Cornelius for the game-winning goal.
The 1-0 win kept the team undefeated with a 6-0 record, and the Vikings are still yet to be scored on this season.
Next week, Academy will look to continue its undefeated season at Worthington Kilbourne on Wednesday, September 11, then again at home on Friday, September 13 and on Saturday, September 14 against Shaker Heights and Ursuline Academy.
