Great week for the girls! (Media team)
Coming off a low week with two tough losses, the girls basketball team started to turn its season around with two strong wins in one of the last weeks of the regular season.
On Tuesday, January 29, CA hosted New Hope Christian Academy for an activity-filled game that began with the Vikes honoring their four senior leaders.
After the ceremony, Academy had somewhat of a slow start, finding itself with a 3-point deficit heading into the second quarter. Shaking off their early game struggles, the Vikes proceeded to outscore New Hope by 9 points in the second, taking a 6 point lead at the half.
During the break, an always welcome Little Dribblers performance energized the crowd for the third period. However, New Hope didn’t allow the energy in The Mack to deter them, charging back and keeping the game close heading into the final minutes.
The teams were tied with under a minute remaining, and the Vikes knew they needed some late-game heroics. Junior Alex Phelps came to the rescue as she hit a game-winning shot with 10 seconds remaining. An airball last-ditch attempt by New Hope sealed the game and gave the Vikes a much needed 42-40 victory.
After a week full of snow days and cancelled practices, the girls found themselves facing Grandview Heights on Saturday, February 2.
The Vikes started out with a strong defense, holding the Bobcats to just 5 points in the first quarter. Nonetheless, Grandview kept it close trailing the Vikes 13-16 at the half.
Grandview came out of the break firing on all cylinders, regaining the lead 23-22 at the end of the third. But Academy turned on the gas, determined to get another league win. CA outscored the Bobcats 15-5 in the fourth, earning a 37-28 win. This was an overall strong performance from the Vikes, with three players contributing 27 points: Spolter’22 with 11, Crockett’19 with 8, and McClendon’21 with 8.
The Vikes look ahead to two road games in the coming week, taking on CSG on Tuesday, February 5, before a league matchup at Whitehall-Yearling on Friday, February 8.
