The girls basketball season opener took place on Monday, November 26, in the Mack against Genoa Christian.

The Vikes hoped to start out their year on the right foot after coming off one of the strongest seasons in recent history. Genoa was due to be a strong opponent for the Vikings, with Academy narrowly winning 27-22  against the Lady Lions in last year’s season opener.

Genoa stayed competitive at the beginning of the game, keeping the eager Vikings to only 20 points in the first half, with a first-half score of 20-12.

Our girls came out firing in the second half, quickly pulling away and outscoring their opponent 21-9 in the second half, for a final score of 41-21 in favor of the Vikes.

Just a day after the home opener, the girls hit the road to travel to Madison Christian on Tuesday, November 27.

The team jumped out to a hot start, thanks to senior leader Shelemiah Crockett, who scored six in each of the first two quarters against the Eagles. She added another four in the second half to single-handedly outscore Madison Christian’s 15 points.

Freshman Sophie Spolter continued the fast scoring pace, getting three quick shots to start the first quarter, finishing with 9 in the contest, and helping the Vikes put up a staggering 54 points.

The team looks to continue its winning start next week with two home games on Tuesday, December 4, against Wellington, and on Friday, December 7 versus Worthington Christian.
