April Absurdity Champions: Deep 3’s Triple B’s pose after their dominant victory. (David Cooperman’20/Staff)
This April, if you looked in the direction of the basketball courts outside of the Dining Hall, you would see crowds of students watching games. This was because of the annual 3 on 3 tournament, April Absurdity, which is modeled after the college basketball tournament, “March Madness.” April Absurdity allows students to pick a team of 3 (along with a substitute) to square off against their peers. Most squads choose a creative name, such as the E-lemon-aters, Sax Trio, and the Taiwan Gorillas.
This event is a fun way to exercise, have fun, and take a break from schoolwork. Sophomore student council member and primary organizer, Miles Razek said, “April Absurdity brings a sense of community and camaraderie across all grades and helps students have a fun way to get energy out during the day.”
Razek’s statement is backed up by the overwhelming support during the games, as it is common to see a crowd of 50 palters cheering on their classmates. The fun of the tournament is added on to by exciting moments, such as sophomore Ez Johnson’s high-flying dunks.
After a month of games and weather delays, teams played the first semifinal, which was between New Edition, made up of juniors Dev Cobb, Dalyn Decree, Jordan Dearing-Hardiman, and Deep 3’s Triple B’s, a talented senior team featuring Max Dreisbach, Jack Ostrowski, Matt Schiano, and substitute Davis Friedman. After a hard fought battle, the seniors earned their place in the championship by a score of 14-11.
The next rivals were another strong senior team consisting of T.J. Whitman, Karibi Hart, and Sam Vogel taking on their classmates Addis Boyd, Chase Kallmerten, and Kieran Law. Whitman, Hart, and Vogel came out on top in a low scoring game, pocketing the 8-6 victory.
An all-senior championship game took place on the seniors’ final day. Dreisbach was unable to play, forcing Friedman to step in. Despite many close finishes, the championship game was decided early, with Deep 3’s Triple B’s taking home the title in a blowout. The victors received tee-shirts, proclaiming them as April Absurdity champs, who also got to cut down the nets as if it were actually the national championship game.
It’s nice to know we can have fun, weather permitting, and get outside when not in our classes.
