From the beginning of the season, the goal for the Vikings golf team has been to bring home a state title. At Districts, Academy’s aspirations drew closer, as the Vikes won the tournament and punched a ticket to States.

On Wednesday, October 5, the boys traveled to Denison Golf Club in Granville with a single berth to the Division 2 State Tournament hanging in the balance. Though each team in the field was exceptionally talented, it soon became clear that the two frontrunners were CA and its archrival, Bexley.

The Lions posted an outstanding 306 overall, but it wasn’t enough to top a hungry Vikes team. Academy’s two senior co-captains aided the team score of 302 with superb individual rounds. Sam Vogel shot a 73, which included course-low 34 on the back nine. Cole Walter followed suit and shot an impressive 75.

The sophomore Vikings also came to play. Ali Khan matched Walter with a 75 of his own, and Kahmar Byers notched a 79 to close out a narrow 4-stroke victory over Bexley.

The Vikes are looking to claim their first state title since 2014, and will have their opportunity at Northstar Golf Club on Friday, October 13, and Saturday, October 14.
