Field Hockey Sustains Strong Start

Academy maintained its winning streak, beating two very different opponents this week. One, Worthington Kilbourne, fought hard against Academy, but was no match for the Viking’s stellar offense. The other, Oakwood, was down a few players, so the Vikings’ primary goal was to boost team morale during the game. Academy still came away with stellar victories in both situations.

Worthington Kilbourne proved to be Academy’s toughest opponents so far when the Vikings the team on Wednesday, August 30. Early on in the first half, the Wolves scored on a corner, barely getting past goalie Alex Phelps’20. The Vikings retaliated with 2 goals, one from Mercedes Crestanello’19, who then provided Abby Yakam’20 with the perfect shot for CA’s second goal. Phelps remained a powerful presence in goal, saving shot after shot, but another corner from Kilbourne snuck past and scored. Academy again swung back with two goals of its own, this time by Callista Popp’19 and Regan Cornelius’21. From there, the Vikes’ defense stood tall and secured a 4-2 win over the Wolves.

Academy made excellent use of its long weekend when it traveled to Oakwood on Saturday, September 2. Even though the Lumberjacks had 4 starters either sick or injured, the Vikings still gave their all, a signal of a motivated team. After a strong start to the game, the Vikings’ coaching staff had an idea. To bolster team chemistry and have the team work as one, the girls switched positions with each other. This idea proved wildly successful, as the Vikes widened their lead, and the girls began cheering loudly for each other. Academy ended up winning 8-0 (goals by Yakam, Crestanello (2), Cornelius, Charlotte Adams’21 (2), Carolyn Bowman’19, and Avie Smith’19) against Oakwood and had a blast doing so.

Academy’s only game this week is at Granville on Wednesday, September 6.
