The Academy boys basketball team dropped its second consecutive game on Tuesday, February 7, falling to Wellington, 53-42. The Vikings are still an impressive 14-5 on the season and remain in a good position as the playoffs approach.
It was all CA at the start. The Vikes surprised the home Dukes with a great first quarter, connecting from midrange over and over to jump out to a 17-9 lead.
Wellington was unfazed as it began to attack the basket and chip away at the lead. By halftime, Academy’s lead had been cut to just 3.
But the break did not cool off the Dukes. They continued their impressive ball movement and took the lead early in the third.
Meanwhile, Academy’s offense had gone ice-cold. Senior Ryan Alexander, who finished with 19 points, tried his best to keep pace with Wellington, but the rest of the Vikes offense could not find its stroke.
The Dukes took a 3-point lead into the fourth quarter and never looked back, eventually picking up an 11-point win.
After their 9-game winning streak, the Vikings have now lost back-to-back games for the first time all year. They will have a chance to get back into the win column when they host Grandview on Saturday, February 11.
