Despite concerns about a lack of performers, Music Club’s second Open Mic of the year was undoubtedly a success.

Musicians played both serious and silly songs, including The Academy Life‘s very own, Ellie Jeffers’20, rapping Dr. Seuss’s “The Cat In The Hat.”

The event even attracted students from outside of the Academy community, with a large number of Bexley students who showed up to support Wrath Of Wednesday, junior Ben Ross’s band. In fact, two of those outside students had so much fun at our open mic that they decided to start their own music club at Bexley.

Wrath of Wednesday played three acoustic songs, featuring Ross on the guitar, before promoting its upcoming show on January 29 at Skully’s Music Diner.

Of course, the sing-along tradition—originally set by the Retchin brothers in 2016— continued with “Fireflies” by Owl City, led by a small group of students.

Open Mic ended on an unusual note, with president Kami Tibbles’17 performing a song that she hadn’t yet written the words to, making them up as she played the piano.

As students milled around afterward, chatting excitedly about their favorite songs from the night, it was clear that the next Open Mic will be eagerly awaited by all.
