Boys Soccer Heads Into Final Stretch, 2-1

The boys soccer team has been put to the test, trying to get rid of that sour taste from last year’s record of 2-15. Throughout the season, it has faced ups and downs, including losing senior captain Brandon H. ’27 to injury after the season’s third game.“Injuries are a part of the game, and you can’t sulk on it, but instead you have to call the next man up, and hope that they respond the way we want them to, “ said Avery L.

The Vikes rocky start of 1-3-1 in the first five games revealed their struggle to get any offense running, going scoreless in those first three losses. Since then, the Boys from Hondros have flipped the script, with a 6-6-3 record heading into their last three games.

On Wednesday, October 7, the boys started off their campaign for the week with a dominant 3-1 win over Whitehall, with goals scored by Clement W., Timothy F., and Vincent A. “We wanted to set the tone early, which we did, scoring two goals in the first 6sixminutes of the game,” Clement said.

The following day, the Vikings held their Senior night against Horizon Science Academy, honoring Ibrahim B., Guszti C., Zak D., Timothy F., Zoheb H., captain Brandon H., Luke L., Sam  O., captain William W., Clement W., and captain Alex W.

The Vikings opened the scoring with a goal from Clement W., assisted by Ibrahim B. on a beautiful pass that allowed Clement to get behind the defense and glide it past the keeper. Timmy F. extended their lead right before the end of the first half, slipping past the defense and delivering a devastating strike for the Hawks. The Vikes carried their momentum into the second half, ending the game 2-0 in favor of the Vikings, boosting morale amongst the players as playoffs approach.

Ending the busy week off, the Vikes traveled to Bishop Hartley, where they took a 3-1 loss in a slugfest with harsh weather and injuries. The lone goal was on a penalty kick from Tej A. “We had little to no subs today, and it did not help that we lost two defenders to injury, a position where we are short on guys,” said Surya V.

Up next, the boys from Hondros will look to finish strong in the last two regular season games. They play at home against St. Francis Desales on Tuesday, 10/13 and Cristo Rey on Thursday, 10/15.

A winning record looms on the horizon for the Vikings, but everyone seems to be asking: Can they get the job done?
