Girls volleyball set the week off with its 10th annual Dig Pink, facing off against Worthington Christian. More than just a match on the schedule, Dig Pink raises critical awareness and support for breast cancer—a disease that affects roughly 13% of women in the US and draws over $2.5 billion annually in global research and awareness efforts.

The night began with a moving pregame ceremony, as team members handed out pink roses to individuals impacted by breast cancer, as well as those supporting loved ones affected by the disease. “I think the Dig Pink event is a great way to raise awareness throughout the CA community regarding breast cancer,” said senior captain Kyndal S.

Following the ceremony, the Vikings took the floor where they fought, but came up short. The first set ended 23-25 in favor of the Warriors. Academy failed to clean up its unforced errors, falling 18-25 and 19-25 in the second and third sets, leading to a 0-3 loss. Junior Sammie W. made many point-saving plays on both sides of the ball, but none were good enough to get the job done.

Despite this outcome, the Vikes have battled to turn the ship around. Starting the season off 1-6, the team looked for a spark to get things going again, which they did find, going 5-2 in their recent stretch of games. They sit at 6-8 on the season, hoping to make a statement in the bottom half of the season. “Even though we lost, I thought the energy was great, and a lot of people showed up,” said Kyndal.

Looking ahead, volleyball has two more games to finish out the week. They play at Buckeye Valley on Thursday, October 1, and home against Bexley on Saturday, October 3. The Vikes lost a heartbreaker to Bexley earlier in the season, 2-3, and they’re looking for vengeance to spark a turnaround in their disappointing season.
