On Monday, September 14th, the girls tennis team travelled to Bishop Watterson for their first match of the week. Even in their own nest, the Eagles stood no chance and were dominated 4-1 in the series by the Vikings.
Just a day later, the Vikings welcomed their league rival CSG to a thrilling match. Starting strong, junior co-captain Ella T. beat her opponent 6-2, 6-4, followed by an exhilarating doubles match between Jaya S. and senior co-captain Ela K. Losing the first set 5-7, Ela and Jaya flipped the script, bouncing back 6-4 and winning the 7-6 tiebreak in the third set to deliver the final blow.
Along the way, the Unicorns took control, defeating the Vikings in two hard-fought battles, leaving only one more on the day.
Coming out confident, seniors Maya J. and Zephyr H. pulled ahead, winning the first set 7-5. But the Unicorns weren’t giving up that easily. In the following set, Maya and Zephyr’s opponents kept fighting, bringing the set to a tiebreaker. With the match on the line, Joyner and Harrison stomped on the gas, refusing to let up. Playing side by side, the Vikings seniors came out of the dogfight victorious. The tiebreaker not only secured the match for the Vikings, but also clinched the overall series win of 3-2 against their rivals, CSG.
In a post-game interview, senior co-captain Ela Koksol stated, “We knew the match wasn’t going to be easy. CSG are our rivals, and we always have a super competitive and intense match against them, so I’m happy we got the win for the third year in a row!”
To finish the week off, only two days later, the Vikings hit the road again to face off against Franklin Heights. Maintaining their hot streak, the Vikings marched in and demolished the Falcons 5-0 in the series without losing a single set. This win brought the Vikings to an undefeated week, adding to their now 10-1 record, standing first in the Central Buckeye League(CBL).
Looking to extend their winning streak, the girls tennis team will host the Upper Arlington Bears on Tuesday, September 22nd. This will be the Vikings final regular season match before they face the bears again just four days later in the first round of the playoffs.
