Under the direction of Ms. Eads, Academy staged its spring musical, Urinetown, from April 23–25 in the Schoedinger Theatre.
The comic tone was established early with fourth-wall-breaking commentary by Billy G. (Officer Lockstock) and Amaya W. (Little Sally), whose interactions with the audience guided the structure of the show. Billy and Lexington P.’s (Officer Barrel) highlighted both actors’ strong timing and dancing ability.
Individual performances also stood out. Aashi M.’s (Hope Cladwell) composed, optimistic character, along with a soulful vocal performance, made her a standout of the night. Andrew J. (Bobby Strong) maintained a clear stage presence, especially in scenes with Hope Cladwell, where their dynamics held the audience’s attention.
Claire S. (Mr. McQueen) and Emily R. (Senator Fipp) contributed consistent acting throughout as part of “the rich,” while Dane C. (Joseph “Old Man” Strong), in his first-ever theatre performance, added humor with his quick, but hilarious appearances. Vocal soloists showed the depth of talent in the department, with Addison G. (Penelope Pennywise) as another standout.
Technical elements supported the performance throughout. The set design used multiple levels to establish lighting and effects, such as smoke that signaled shifts in tone and emphasized important moments in the plot.
The costuming was distinguished between the social classes, which reinforced the show’s satire. This production reflected strong coordination across departments, from Mrs. Eads’s direction to the execution of technical elements and performances. The level of preparation and consistency shown by the cast and crew made Urinetown one of the most effective productions reviewed this year.
