Step into Style: How Shoes Stand Out In a Sea of Uniforms

Izu N./Staff

In a school where nearly everyone wears the same uniform every day, there is one place where students can show their individuality: in their shoes.

Shoes have become one of the most important ways students express themselves, and certain brands dominate the hallways. Based on my observations, Nike appears to be the most commonly worn brand, with Adidas and UGGs close behind. Converse, New Balance, Birkenstock, and Sperry are also common, each offering something different in style and comfort.

These preferences come down to how brands are designed. Some focus more on comfort, while others prioritize appearance. Adidas and New Balance are often considered among the most comfortable options, known for soft cushioning and strong support, which make them ideal for long days of walking around school. Birkenstocks also stand out for their structured footbed, which molds to the foot over time and provides strong arch support.

Nike tends to fall somewhere in the middle, offering a balance between performance and style. Many of its shoes are designed for both athletic use and everyday wear, making them a versatile choice for students. Converse is widely worn for its look, even though they offer less support due to their flat soles and minimal cushioning.

Some brands serve more specific roles. UGGs, known for their soft, warm lining, are popular during colder months, while Sperrys are lightweight and casual but not always ideal for long periods of walking.

That balance between comfort and style shows up clearly in student opinions. “I care more about style than comfort,” Addison M. said. “If my foot doesn’t fit in a shoe but it looks cute, I’ll still wear it.”

Others put comfort first. “They have to be comfortable, or I won’t wear them,” Rosemary J. said, highlighting how to get through the school day without discomfort, and added, “I bought UGGs because everyone else had them and said they loved them.”

Even with trends and outside influence, students still find ways to make their choices personal. Whether it is prioritizing comfort or focusing on style, shoes have become more than just part of an outfit, a small difference stands out more than anything else.
