Our girls basketball team’s historic season came to a close Wednesday night, February 4, in regional semifinals, but the varsity team’s achievements this year will be remembered long after the final buzzer. Although the loss ended Academy’s playoff run, the Vikings’ season was nothing short of historic. The team captured the program’s first regional tournament appearance, first district championship, conference championship, and set a new single-season wins record. Even more impressive, the Vikings’ 24 wins came in 24 consecutive games, showcasing the team’s consistency and determination throughout the season.
Academy’s 62–57 fall to top-ranked Ottawa-Glandorf Titans at Mansfield, ending the Vikings remarkable 24-2 run, delivering one of the most successful seasons in program history.
Facing an undefeated opponent ranked No. 1 in Division V, the Vikings competed with intensity from the opening tip. Ottawa-Glandorf held a narrow 20–18 lead after the first quarter, but Academy kept the game close throughout the first half, trailing 31–27 at halftime.
The Vikings surged in the third quarter, outscoring the Titans 17–9 and taking a 44–40 lead heading into the final period. With strong defensive pressure and clutch scoring, Academy looked composed and ready to extend its season. But the Titans rallied in the final eight minutes, scoring 22 points and sealing the game. Gia C. led the Vikings with 19 points, while Kendall O. added 17 in the effort.
Beyond the statistics and trophies, the season was defined by the team’s chemistry and leadership. The Vikings repeatedly found ways to overcome challenges, supporting one another and representing Academy with pride.
“This season has been my favorite. I am very proud of everyone. We got better and had fun every day! Our names are now in the history books!” said Kendall.
“Despite the unfortunate loss,” said Katie N., “this season has meant so much to me, especially friendship-wise. We have all built such strong relationships with our teammates, the seniors, and the coaches, and I am grateful for that.”
Even in defeat, the Vikings proved they could compete with the best teams in the state. Their resilience against an undefeated powerhouse showed just how far the program has come.
With a historic season now part of the program’s legacy, the Vikings have set a new standard for the future.
