Whether it is scrolling on Instagram or TikTok, five minutes of scrolling turning into hours of doom scrolling, or when we unhealthily compare ourselves to the perfect, airbrushed snippets of others’ lives, too many of us are tied to our screens. With our substantial amount of daily screen time, why not pick up a new, screen-free hobby? Anything from knitting to running is sufficient to distract us from our screens. However, I have the perfect recommendation: reading. Here are seven reasons why reading more is beneficial for everyone:
Increases Brain Activity– Did you know that reading can have cerebral effects on your brain? Reading allows you to immerse yourself in the lives of various characters and helps more areas of your brain to become stronger and more activated. By picking up a book, you are adapting the powerful brain benefits that accompany reading.
Reduces Stress– Reading can also lower blood pressure, slow down heart rate, and relax muscles. Building a habit of reading for as little as thirty minutes can help you when you are caught up in schoolwork, sports, or jobs. Even audiobooks can lessen the physical symptoms of stress.
Increase Knowledge– While it is easy to turn to YouTube or TikTok to learn how to adjust a tie or find a new recipe, books help expand your knowledge beyond the surface level and allow you to delve into the depths. Higher reading comprehension has also often been tied to better scientific literacy.
Improves Memory– While your brain is keeping track of the information or storyline, it develops your verbal recall while activating your short-term and long-term memory. It also improves neural productivity and active recall.
Develops Creativity– As we live in the digital age, especially with the rapid development of artificial intelligence, it feels like creativity is a myth of the past. However, reading is the perfect tool for reinforcing our creativity and imagination. Particularly, fiction is great for this, as imagining the worlds and characters of the story helps you visually think. The more you read, the more you’ll increasingly find yourself thinking more creatively in all areas of your life.
Improves Mental Health– Rising depression and anxiety rates have become one of the most alarming problems in society. Social media only exacerbates these issues, as it displays many unrealistic standards and makes many feel disconnected or insecure in their life. Reading is a unique way to help others feel connected and have a stronger sense of self-worth.
Source of Entertainment– Unlike social media addictions, reading is harmless and keeps your brain active.
From romantic comedies to biographies—the options are endless. Not only are you finding a new hobby, you are building habits that will benefit you beyond the pages.
