Patrick and Charlie’s Weekly Sports Round-Up

(Wikamedia)

After a brief hiatus to start the year, the round up is back to fill you in on all that’s happening in the world of sports

The NBA kicked its season off last week and has been one of the most entertaining starts in recent memory. The biggest story is the gambling scandal that has rocked the sports world. Last Thursday, NBA legend and Trailblazers head coach Chauncey Billups was arrested, along with the Miami Heat’s Terry Rozier and many others, for their involvement in an illegal gambling ring that involves purposely throwing games, as well as running an illegal poker league that steals money from wealthy participants drawn in by the opportunity to play with NBA legends. Not much else has been announced yet, but FBI Director Kash Patel announced that this investigation is unprecedented in sports. In less dramatic news, the Spurs are 5-0 for the first time in franchise history (shocking given their vast success in the 21st century) thanks to a spectacular start from 21-year old Victor Wembanyama, who so far is averaging 34 points, 15 rebounds, and 5 blocks. The Thunder, Bulls, and 76ers are also undefeated. We have seen 50-point games from Luka, Anthony Edwards, and multiple from Austin Reaves, who has been balling while Doncic and LeBron have been out. Sixers first round pick VJ Edgecombe is leading Rookie of the Year polls so far and made history with a 34-point game in his first ever NBA contest against the Boston Celtics. It is still early to tell, but I predict we will see a Thunder vs. Bucks finals with the Thunder prevailing for back-to-back rings. Patrick

The MLB season has wrapped up after one of the most entertaining World Series showings in recent memory. After a battle between the Toronto Blue Jays and The Los Angeles Dodgers, both teams found themselves in game seven of in a winner-takes-all matchup. Prior to game seven, Toronto took games one, four and five while the Dodgers won games two, three and six. The Blue Jays had the advantage of playing on their home turf. The game started off with neither team generating any runs until the third inning. Following this lack of offense by both teams, Toronto’s Bo Bichette sent a three-run homerun into the stands to put the first runs on the board. The Dodgers answered, however, as they notched a run in innings four and six to put the score at 3-2 in favor of the Blue Jays. Toronto furthered its slim lead thanks to a solo homerun by shortstop, Andrés Giménez which did not go unanswered as Max Muncy and Miguel Rojas each homered in the eighth and ninth innings notching the score at 4-4 as the game went into extra innings. Both teams did not generate any runs in the 10th inning, but in the top of the 11th, Dodgers catcher Will Smith hit a solo shot to take the lead 5-4. The Blue Jays ended up stranding two men on base in the bottom of the 11th after they hit into a double play ending the game and sending Toronto fans home heartbroken. With this Dodgers win, they have won two championships in a row. I guess we must wait until next season to see if a three-peat is in the coming future. Charlie
