Kids 4 Kids officially kicked off last week with a new major event for the US: the CA-Ditarod, the purpose being “just to have more fun,” according to Ms. Bening. She says that food pantries are currently suffering, and there was hope that this experience could generate more food, create a higher participation level in the food drive, and add a more engaging activity to the annual US Bingo.
Much like the Arctic Iditarod, participants had a “musher” and several “dogs”, but instead of a sled and dogs, the CA-ditarod used a grocery cart driven by one student and pulled by three students who were tethered to the cart. CA-ditarod map
Each team began the course at the US/MS drop off and headed to the first challenge: building boxes in front of the Dining Hall. The next challenge was to weave through slalom/agility poles, followed by the team’s effort to complete ten jumping jacks to advance to the courtyard outside the 5th grade hallway. Here, team members stacked cans before rushing past the art building to participate in a recycling/trash toss. Afterwards, they ran to the finish line, with the eleventh grade emerging victorious, earning Bingo points and dress-down day points for the Junior class. Representative Ashley H. says, “This experience not only bonded me with my community members, but it also felt good to be able to help local food pantries.” She added that the feeling of completing the course was “accomplishing and inspiring.”
In addition to the CA-Ditarod challenge, advisories received their Bingo cards last week: a board of non-perishable food items to collect before November 4 where a US Bingo game will be played to determine prizes (not yet to be revealed).
This week will be students’ last chance to bring in their advisory’s designated food items before the Bingo in advisory on Tuesday, November 4.
Additionally, Service Board’s annual Begging for Cans will take place on Thursday, October 30, when students can sign up to go trick or treating for donations in The Villages of Gahanna.
