Throughout the school year, the Art Department celebrates students’ creativity with events such as its annual art displays and Senior Art Night. A lesser-known tradition is the Division-wide Art Showcase, displaying pieces from the Explorers to our seniors. Crystal Tursich, Fine Arts Department Chair and Upper School Art Teacher, says, “We want to showcase the depth of our program, as around 100-200 pieces are displayed. Once you start, it’s hard to stop.”
These art shows are much more than just a collection of art as they display the talent and effort of numerous students, giving them a chance for their work to be more highly recognized. “A lot of teachers who aren’t art teachers get to see a different side of their students from what they see in class, and the younger kids get really excited to see their classmates’ artwork,” said Tursich.
The Morris Hall display will run until December 12. A variety of students’ work are displayed, many being pieces from popular art projects, like Mrs. Rusnak’s foundation class first-time” Eyes and Perspective” project, as the two-point perspective got pushed back this year. Every year, the art classes introduce new and innovative art projects to inspire creativity and teach new skills. Another new project on display is the colorful mandalas made by the lower schoolers. Some other notable projects displayed are photography students’ “Day in the Life” photo series, 3D paper flowers made by the lower schoolers, and ceramic bowls for the Service Boards’ Empty Bowls event.
Tursich wants more of the upper school to view the exhibit. “I’m trying to set up a day where I can invite students to come in for an in-school art reception, possibly during the next Common Hour.” Tursich says. Look for an upcoming invitation to an in-school art reception, and make sure to stop by Morris Hall.
