For April’s Arab American Heritage Month, MENA (Middle Eastern and North African Affinity), Ms. Chahal’s Modern Middle East class performed alongside Warithat, a dance troupe, on May 1.

MENA members Nousha A., Zaina A., Sophia C., and Aliya S. introduced the assembly with Arab American Heritage Month’s significance and trivia, including famous Arab Americans and flags. While Academy assemblies have acknowledged Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage, Black History, and Hispanic Heritage months, this was our celebration of Arab American Heritage.

Enthusiasm was evident with loud clapping for the highlight of the already talented dancers which included of eleven students in our Modern Middle East class, which covers conflicts, culture, U.S. foreign policy, and Arab involvement with Islam.

Ellen H., one of the dancers, said, “I learned a lot about Arab American history through this process. While it was difficult at the beginning, it was fun learning the dance, and I received knowledge in a new way, creating a rewarding experience.”
