Running Around With Columbus Academy’s Newest Club

Gabe E. in Boys 200m (CA Track and Field Parents)

Indoor Track is Academy’s latest addition to its activities of winter athletics. Although the club is not yet sanctioned as an official sport, the sixteen-person squad coached by Chris Mealick has regular Tuesday and Thursday practices, with competitions against 57 other teams. In its first meet on Sunday, January 22, Academy placed 3rd at Otterbein.

All members belong either to cross country or track teams or both.

As the name suggests, participants race indoors, which protects runners from the elements but decreases speed as runners lose momentum from sharp turns and short tracks. For the team’s inaugural members, this appeared daunting, yet Sunday’s meet marked an impressive start as many members placed.

Gabe E. took 11th in the Boys 200m with a time of 25.17.  In the 800m, Dane C. and Matt T. ran away with 14th and 23rd with times of 2:20.20 and 3:10.07.

Zoya A. and Caitlynn H. placed 4th and 7th in the Girls 400m, finishing in 1:05.99 and 1:06.59. In the 1600, Melanie Q. raced to 8th with a 6:02.95, and Sophie L. ran to 20th with a 6:59.10.

The club’s next meet takes place on February 4 at OSU’s French Field House.
