Google Pops Out Bubble Tea Doodle

It’s not every day that a popular beverage gets its own Google Doodle, but that’s what happened on Sunday, Jan. 29. The search giant celebrated bubble tea with an interactive doodle that allowed users to serve five different customers by creating virtual bubble tea according to the characters’ orders, just two years after the bubble tea emoji was first introduced.

Bubble tea, also known as pearl milk tea or boba, originated in Taiwan in the 1980s and has since become a global phenomenon. The drink is traditionally made by shaking tea with milk, sweetener, and ice, and adding chewy tapioca pearls to the bottom of the cup. The tapioca pearls, also known as “boba,” give the drink its unique texture and flavor.

With an industry evaluated at $2.17 billion, bubble tea has been particularly popular among millennials and Gen Z due to its possible customizations. Boba-lovers can choose from a juice, slushy, tea, or smoothie base, various flavors ranging from honeydew to ube to creme brulee, popping or regular boba, and more health-conscious additions such as oat milk.

The Google Doodle, created by Jennifer Holm, features Taiwan’s indigenous Formosan Mountain Dog opening a cartoon bubble tea stand in a rainy forest. Users add boba, tea, and syrup to the customers’ orders, and receive a star each time the ingredient amount lands on a white line, which gets thinner and thinner as the game progresses, for up to three stars on each order. Customers include ghosts and two cats from former Halloween doodles and the Doodle Champion Island Games.

So go ahead, take a moment to mix your own virtual cup of bubble tea, and let the good times bubble.
