Conan Gray, 22 year-old singer/songwriter, has just released his new single “Overdrive,” and it’s already jumped on the charts, hitting spot 46 on the Hot 100. The song was leaked in July of 2020, but no release date was given. On February 19, 2021, however, the song finally went public, and in less than a month, it has received over 9 million streams on Spotify alone.
This is Gray’s first single, though he released a duet with Lauv called “Fake” in late 2020. Other albums include Sunset Season and Kid Krow.
A major part of Conan’s work is being honest about things that people don’t usually talk about, which helps him relate to teenagers. In “Overdrive,” he says he doesn’t care about labels and to “throw the dice on the table” to see how they roll. This line about just living life without caring about what others think about them is relatable for people who feel like they are constantly being judged.
While “Overdrive” falls more into the Pop music category than some of Gray’s other songs, and some fans may say that his other music is better, his new song gives him a chance to be featured on pop radio stations and allows him to expand his range as an artist.
“Overdrive” is three minutes and three seconds long and was also released with a music video that runs three minutes and twenty-eight seconds.
