Ice Hockey Ends Regular Season on a Sour Note

On Friday, February 5, the Ice Hockey team played its second to last game of the regular season against Athens at Chiller Easton. The first two periods of the game were deadlocked, with neither team breaking through for a goal. In the third, however, Athens scored first with only 13:35 left in the game. Academy fought back: Campbell Gwin’21 tied it up to take a point from the game.

Then, on Saturday, February 6, Academy played its final regular season game against the tough St. Xavier. Unlike the Athens game the day before, the two teams scored fast and frequently.

St. Xaavier opened the scoring with 12:56 to go in the first, but Jake Carlin’22 quickly tied it up for the Vikes.

In the second, two quick goals from Adam Bradley’23 and Gwin put the Vikes ahead. With 9:56 to go in the period, Gwin added a fourth for Academy. Unfazed, St. X  quickly scored two to close out the second, with only one goal down.

In the final period, St. X ran away with the game, scoring five goals to defeat Academy 8-4.

Despite this loss, Academy clinched a fourth place finish in its division and will find out its opponent in the state tournament, which starts on February 15. The tournament draw takes place on February 10.
