Girls Swimming Takes MSL Runner-Up

The Columbus Academy AquaVikes had their last regular season meet on Tuesday, January 26. The Vikes secured a 102.5-67.5 victory over St. Francis DeSales before honoring seniors Laura Campbell, Rowan Hennessy, and Vera Anderson in a Senior Night celebration. 

The girls started off the meet with a bang, as Claire Richardson’23 and juniors Alexandra Butnariu, Mary Kate Prall, and Emma Yakam sprinted to a first place finish in the 200 medley. Prall and Richardson continued the momentum into the 200 freestyle, earning first and second, respectively.

Butnariu followed with a victory in the 200 IM, clocking in at 2:26.37, with Camille Hannallah close behind in second place. 

Prall dominated in the 100 butterfly, with Yakam earning silver at a time of 1:07.14. Butnariu, Richardson, and Rene Fleege’24 secured the top three respective spots in the 100 free, before Ella Lowrie’24 took second in the 500 free. 

Charlotte Baker’24, Butnariu, Fleege, and Yakam conquered their opponents in the 200 free relay, before Yakam and Fleege continued the momentum into the 100 breaststroke to place first and second, respectively. 

Julia DeVore’22, Lowrie, Prall, and Richardson wrapped up the meet, finishing second in the 400 free relay with a final time of 4:08.21. 

The girls entered the postseason as they dominated in the MSL championship on Saturday, January 30. The Vikings faced off against seven other teams, earning the runner-up title with a total of 241 points. 

The junior squad of Butnariu, Klinefelter, Prall, and Yakam kicked off the meet, nabbing silver in the 200 medley relay. Butnariu and Lowrie continued to the 200 free, where the girls claimed fourth and sixth, respectively. Klinefelter secured a silver in the 200 IM and 100 butterfly, before Richardson took sixth in the 50 free. 

Prall dominated in the 100 free, placing fourth with a final time of 59.30 and earning the AquaVikes 11 points. Butnariu continued the trend, securing a fourth-place finish, with Lowrie close behind at sixth. 

Fleege, Lowrie, Richardson, and Yakam nabbed third in the 200 free relay, while Prall claimed bronze in the 100 backstroke. Yakam continued on to take second in the 100 breaststroke, finishing with a time of 1:14.06. 

The squad of Butnariu, Klinefelter, Prall, and Richardson wrapped up the meet with a second-place finish in the 400 free, clocking in at 3:54.30 and earning 26 points. 

The JV girls will continue on to the JV Championships on Saturday, February 6, at the CSG natatorium. Looking ahead, the varsity AquaVIkes hope to build on their success at sectionals on Saturday, February 13.
