Halloween is known for some classic films such as It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, Beetlejuice, and Coraline. But Netflix’s new movie Hubie Halloween will not be added to the canon: it is a major misfire.
Hubie Dubois (Adam Sandler) is the unpopular but devoted community volunteer in the town of Salem, yet when people start disappearing on Halloween night, Hubie won’t give up until he can ensure his town’s safety.
This film’s star-studded cast includes Adam Sandler, Noah Schnapp, Kevin James, Steve Buscemi, Julie Bowen, Rob Schneider, Shaquille O’Neal, and Maya Rudolph. Fans are excited about this mini Disney Channel reunion, because child actors such as Peyton List, Karan Brar, China Anne-McCLain, Kelly Berglund, Bradley Steven-Perry, and Paris Berlec all make appearances throughout. Today’s teenagers grew up watching these actors on Disney, and seeing them all together again allowed teens to revisit their childhood favorites.
Don’t let this stellar cast fool you, however. Hubie Halloween is one of the worst movies I have seen in a long timAdam Sandler has his over used signature “dumb voice,” that makes the film unbearable to watch, and the writing is weak.
While the film was made for fun and not to be taken seriously, there is so much wasted potential. With such a funny cast, a cool premise, and the spooky halloween aesthetic, it could have been a great movie, but it flopped.
Adam Sandler starred in Grown Ups with Cameron Boyce, and dedicated the movie to him after his passing last year at the age of twenty. Cameron was also a disney star, and his closest friends in the Hubie Halloween. The dedication to Cameron was endearing and sweet.
The film’s initial release is on Thursday, October 7, and is rated PG-13. It is found on Netflix, and its run time is 102 minutes.
