Service Board Still Strong but with Modifications

Like almost every organization at CA, Service Board is going to look different this year due to safety concerns. Its mission, however, remains the same—to continue serving the community. “The biggest challenge for Service Board this year is figuring out what events are still possible and how we will alter these events to make sure we are keeping the Academy community and others safe,” said Lauren Motta, Service Board President. Due to the coronavirus, Service Board traditions may not be as numerous as in past years, but they are planning to add new functions to help those in the community affected by COVID.

Service Board is also taking the necessary precautions to keep everyone safe. In past years, all Service Board members could collect recycled materials on Wednesdays, But this year, only the Shapers, Service Board’s internal advisory board, are conducting weekly recycling. The shapers have been divided into their respective color groups and been assigned a specific location. Whenon campus, they gather the recycled items.

Another minor change this year is that “Tidy up Tuesday” is going to be held on Fridays this wee during school (instead of after school). It will be held once a week alternating color groups each week before we return to school 100%.

The Fall Blood Drive this year will not be held at school. Instead, it will take place at a donation center and a van will be available to transport donors to and from school.

Reaching out to the community beyond the Columbus Academy’s walls is still available through Service Board. Volunteering to help the homeless at Faith Mission will still be sponsored monthly by Service Board, but the number of Academy students allowed at each visit will be reduced from five to two.

For now Service will be limited to meal delivery.

Our annual food drive, “Ten Can Days” will still take place during the winter. Another one of CA’s oldest traditions—the clothing drive–will not occur at this time.

If you love to help others, consider joining Service Board! It is one of the largest organizations at Academy with over 100 members strong.
