The CA boys basketball team went 4-0 over winter break, highlighted by a road win over archrival Bexley, and picked up right where it left off on Wednesday, January 9, as the Vikes traveled to undefeated Johnstown-Monroe and picked up a 53-44 victory over the Johnnies.

After scoring the first bucket of the game, Johnstown struggled to crack Academy’s suffocating defense, as the Vikings ripped off an 11-1 run to take control. The Johnnies regained their footing, but senior Chris Boyle buried his second deep-range bomb to give CA a 15-7 lead at the end of the first period.

With its perfect record already in danger, Johnstown tried to cut into the deficit. Hayden Compton would have none of it, as the senior wreaked havoc on the Johnnies attack in yet another dominant defensive performance. On the other end, classmate Dalyn DeCree continued to feast en route to a game-high 15 points, and the Vikes went to the locker rooms with a 12-point advantage.

The low-scoring affair resumed after halftime, and Academy kept Johnstown a comfortable distance away, taking a 33-20 lead into the fourth quarter.

A 10-2 flurry from the Johnnies closed the gap, but the Vikings didn’t flinch. Instead, CA responded with 5 unanswered points to boost its advantage back up to double digits. With Johnstown in need of a miracle, Boyle and fellow senior Dorrian Moultrie slammed the door, as the pair calmly drained 10 straight free throws to ice the game for the Vikes. Each finished with 11 points on the night, as Academy earned a signature win.

Due to inclement weather, the Vikings’ scheduled trip to Whitehall on Saturday, January 12 was postponed.

CA will look to extend its 5-game winning streak, as they play host to Horizon Science Academy on Thursday, January 17, and Wellington on Saturday, January 19.
