One Win, One Loss in Opening Week for CA Bowling

The Academy bowling squad opened its 2019 season this week. After three matches, both the girls and boys teams stand with a 1-2 record,  with promising performances from both newcomers and veterans.

On December 5, the boys competed against Briggs, with Ryan Reagan’22 showing an impressive 167 and 152. Fellow rookie, Vincent White Jr.’21 sported 127 and 124, respectively, and Captain Michael Hoffman’20 was consistent, with 113 in both rounds. Sophomores Xander Wood and Cole Leis improved their scores immensely in the second round, with Wood going from 98 to 133, and Leis going from 85 to 112. Unfortunately, our boys lost 1830 to 1547.

The girls also fell to the Bruins, 1422 to 1185. Senior captain Katie Wunsch led the way with scores of 136 and 110. Fellow senior Sidney Edson bowled 91 and 90. Tara Hoffman’22 had an impressive debut, with scores of 120 and 80. Sanskruti Admane’20 bowled well with a score of 119 in the second round. Juniors Gianna Bates and Nikki Turley put up 76 and 73, respectively. The girls were matched up against tough opponent Dakota Fink, who put on a show, bowling 209 and 201.

The boys picked up their first win on December 6 match against West, with 1589 to 1169. Hoffman’20 led the way in this one, bowling 134 and 169. Reagan was not far behind, with a 161 and 134. White also impressed, with 143 and 149. Wood had an astounding first round: 168 and then 109. Leis had a strong outing, sporting 121 and 107.

The girls also defeated the Cowboys for their first win, with  strong performance from Wunsch with a117 and 129. Evelyn Olexio’21 turned some heads with a smooth 105 and 110. Bates had 99 and 78, respectively. Hoffman had 98 and 78, with Julia Gurevitz’19 having 85 in the second round and Divya Narayanan’21 with a 81 in the first round.

The Vikes closed out the week with a December 7 loss to Worthington Christian. The boys fell 1687 to 1494, and the girls lost 1229 to 1137.

The bowling program faces tough challenges onWednesday, December 12, against Northland, and on Friday, December 14, against Centennial. Both matches will take place at HP Lanes.
